22. Tell me, what will you do
with your one, wild and precious life?
(Mary Oliver)
Aim
To
risk seeing, living life more fully, as the gift of God.
Focal
Point
An
array of postcards that shows life in all its richness and diversity.
Leader's
Introduction
Invite
people, in a period of quiet, to think and reflect on these questions in
turn and after each to have sharing as a listening, not discussion
group, without comment.
- If
you had to tell someone what you think of life at the moment, what
symbols or words would you use?
-
If you knew you were to die within the next three months, what unfinished
business would you be taking care of, especially with regard to
relationships?
- Would
you re-prioritise things in your life?
- Why
would you need to be "terminal" before re-prioritising things
in your life?
- In
the light of the foregoing, how do these words from St John's Gospel
resonate within you? "I
am come that you might have life, life in all its fullness."
- Do these words change anything
for you?
And
tell me, what will you do with your one, wild and precious life?
The
leader can select from the following material (prepared sheets will
help).
- Describe
yourself at your best.
- What
meaning does life currently have for you?
- What
are the situations which bring out the best in you and make you feel
more fully alive?
- What
do you love passionately?
- What
will be your legacy of love, that which you will have passed on?
-
In
relationships?
- In
the Church?
- In
the wider world?
Sharing
as listening, not discussion group, without comment.
Invite
people to reflect in a period of quiet on their own responses, and those
of others who shared, and then to address these questions:
If
you were to be in touch with what you deeply want and desire, for God
and yourself ...
- Describe
yourself at your best.
- What
would you see as your life's meaning?
- What
would be the situations that would bring out the best in you, and make
you feel more fully alive?
- What
would you love passionately?
- What
would you see as your legacy of love, that which you will have passed
on?
- In
relationships?
- In
the Church?
-
In
the wider world?
Prayerfully
reflect on what adjustments you might realistically make to begin to
bring about your deepest desire, and so help you become more fully and
authentically human.
Sharing
as listening, not a discussion group, without comment.
Prayer
Exercise
In
living out your giftedness in the service of God's people imagine each
"living out", bringing a deep sense of gratitude to the heart
of God for sharing yourself. And surely a smile to the face of God. Pray
out of this.
