Glimpses of God in the Mess,
Muddle and Mystery of Life

Resources for small groups
by David Bosworth and Phil Hoar

In this series of resources, David Bosworth and Phil Hoar seek to "see" glimpses of God in the everyday mess, muddle and mystery of life. This is the God to be found in all things, and not just the religious bits of life.

The Jesuit writer, Gerard W Hughes, author of the acclaimed God of Surprises and its recent follow-up God In All Things writes:

The invitation is to look more closely for the God to be found in everything, closer to me than I am to myself, for God is in every fact every moment. Everything and everyone is sacred. Every bush is burning, if only we have eyes to see.

This series may be of some use to those looking to lead and resource quiet, reflective, prayerful, and at times challenging, work with small groups, church services that lend themselves to this approach, quiet days. Or, with adaptation, the material might be of use in private devotion.

The emphasis throughout is on reflection, sharing and being open to move deeper into God, and toward that which is more life-giving.

In this series, leaders are offered:

  • Introductory material, and "ways in" to times of reflection and prayer, so do be selective.
  • Encouragement to play reflective music to suit the material and group.
  • The need to have on hand pens and paper for jottings etc.
  • Material for reflection that will need preparing beforehand as handouts.
  • The opportunity to be imaginative and creative with the focal points.
  • Encouragement to opt for sharing as a listening, not a discussion group (except when told otherwise).

For those willing to share, treat what is given with gentleness and respect and without comment, resisting any temptation to rescue. Create a short time of silent prayer between contributions, to be thankful.

Assurance of confidentiality within the group is essential, and must be agreed upon, and upheld, if individuals are to be vulnerable enough to share something of themselves.
