When
Heaven Kisses Earth
The
Life and Spirituality of
Hildegard of Bingen
A
weekend retreat at St Antony's Priory
October 5 - 7, 2012
Leader: Lynn Nausner
The
earth which sustains humanity must not be injured, it must not be
destroyed.
For
Hildegard, the whole universe, heaven and earth, faith and natural science, as
well as human life in all its facets was a mirror of divine love which pointed
to the Creator.
It is quite amazing to discover that this 12th-century visionary was
already urging us to care not only for the earth but also for ourselves.
On the subject of well-being and her use of natural remedies, she was
ahead of her time and has been called the first women physician in Germany.
Hildegard may be known for her music, but thanks to her extensive writing, not
only through correspondence but also through her three major visionary works,
she has opened up a window into medieval Benedictine monasticism.
Hildegard
expresses her love for God with gentle intimacy - 'the soul is kissed by
God in its innermost regions' or again 'the mystery of God hugs
you in its all encompassing arms.'
Some
of the topics we will explore are aspects of Hildegard’s life. These will
include her music, correspondence, visions,
friendships and her use of natural remedies. Please be assured that no
previous knowledge of Hildegard is necessary.
Retreat
Leader: Lynn Nausner
Originally
from Ireland, Lynn now lives in Durham with her husband and two children. As
well as leading quiet days and offering spiritual direction, Lynn is currently
studying counselling. She
was first introduced to Hildegard while living in Germany and has since been
challenged and inspired by Hildegard’s wisdom and struggles.
