Introduction to the
Enneagram

The Enneagram is an ancient form of personality typing which helps us understand ourselves and the unconscious mental and emotional habits which drive our behaviour. Each one of us is unique - but there are nevertheless some things which are common to us all. When we understand the themes and issues we each face, we may begin to change. Indeed, knowing in itself is change.

The Enneagram (from the Greek ennea for "nine" and gramma for "written") proposes nine types which fall into three centres:

  • Heart
  • Instinctual (or "Gut"), and
  • Head.

Exploring this ancient diagnostic system with others gives participants an experience which is seldom achieved by reading and book. There will be time for reflection, sharing and fun during a lively weekend. This is the best way into the Enneagram. It provides you with the information and assistance in understanding the various types.

You will not only discover much about your largely hidden motivations in life, but also gain insights into others close to you to give you a greater understanding of your relationships. You will learn about each space, the meaning of the arrows (see the diagram above), the speech and energy behaviours of each space and much more. Some work will be done alone, some in pairs and some in groups.

Some colleges of Durham University are within walking distance of the Priory and offer bed and breakfast (e.g. St John's College, Hatfield College and Hild & Bede College: See Durham University).
